Pinocchio & Jiminy

I've mentioned on my blog before that Pinocchio is my favorite movie ever. Then I said the exact same thing about Mary Poppins. Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about or what I think. For the purpose of sounding like I know my own opinion, I'm going to say that Pinocchio is my favorite animated movie ever. For Toon Club's Pinocchio topic, I finally had a reason to try my hand at drawing Pinocchio again. My first attempt was... well, reviews have been mixed. This was a lot of fun to draw... especially the "Jiminy Cricket" part.

Jiminy Cricket is the coolest. He taught me that, if I don't ride my bike into oncoming traffic, I might live to be 23. I'm getting close to 33 now, so I must have subconsciously heard the second verse too. Actually I just don't ride a bike at all... which is the best way to avoid bicycle-riding death. I'm no fool.

I hung Jiminy Cricket on the rear-view mirror in my car... but not in the "Old West execution" style like it sounds. It's actually a Christmas tree ornament, and Jiminy's hanging from his umbrella... not his neck. I put him there because I thought having a conscience nearby might curb my road-rage. Hasn't really worked, though. If you're not passing anyone, get to the right! Even "plastic Jiminy ornament" knows that.

Dido’s on the passing thing. I wonder what I could hang off my mirror to help me rage. Maybe a water gun?!?! Always wanted a bazooka mounted on the front of my car.

Awesome illustration Shane! Where can I get me a conscience to hang from my mirror? Sounds like a great idea. My wife thinks that I rage when I drive, but I think of it as strategic aggressive maneuvering. Or in other words it's my way of avoiding getting into an accident because of all the people who aren't paying attention to the road because they're too busy calling their boyfriends/girlfriends, applying makeup, e-mailing the newspaper to complain about how dangerous it is to drive in Utah & simultaneously fixing a 4 course dinner on the seat next to them.

I'll write more later, I've got to use my turn signal, my exits coming up.

Your Disney employment is well deserved. This is a fantastic likeness, Frank & Ollie would be proud! The hands are definitely Disney, and Jiminy’s spot on. Great job!

That's when you wish you were driving the "Monstro 1500" by Chevy, which would swallow up the slowees in the fast lane. It'd give them time to contemplate the err of their ways.

Great work. You've got it down. Hope all is well with you in beautiful Utania. Keep it up.

Great work, Shane! Superb job! I'm a big fan of "Pinocchio" myself!

I also have a Jiminy Cricket ornament in my car, but he's hanging from a suction cup. I also got a Sorcerer Mickey one hanging there, too.

I know this is off-topic, but do you like "Fantasia"? 'cause by the look of it you'd probably master drawing any of those characters from the film. It would definitely make a great topic over at Toon Club.

That's an amazing drawing - but don't trust my opinion, if my stick figures have sticks, I'm doing well. Your comments are hysterical! I'm also a non-bike rider, which may save my life today, but the extra pounds I'm packing on might do the job tomorrow!

Shane, great illustration and helarious commentary, as usual. Your blog is a big attraction in internet land. Look at all these comments! Do I see a spinoff show on ABC coming up? That's when we know blogging's gone too far.

It's been a while since I visited. I just read about 10 blogs for the first time. Laughed out loud several times. Cried twice. Not sure why the crying.

my favorite part (although the artwork is incredible..I usually hate it when people attempt to do famous cartoon characters but this is amazing) is where you had a little discussion about whether or not you love which movie...

This is great. I like how warm and cozy this is. Pinocchio has always freaked me out a little. I think it's the whole bit with the donkey ears.

Your picture of him makes me want to give the film another chance though. :)

Another great illustration! I love the neutral tones you've been doing recently. This one really gives it that dated, retro-y look. Love your blog! Keep 'em coming!
