Spider-Monkey

I grew up with three sisters and a mom… the only man of the house (as long as you don’t object to using the word “man” that loosely). While my friends were watching The Dukes of Hazzard and The A-Team with their brothers and dads, I was watching The Love Boat and The Facts of Life with the Lewis women. Thanks to this lack of childhood exposure to boyish things, I grew up without much interest in comic books or superheroes… unless you consider Tootie a superhero. There would be a case for that, but I’m not going to make it right now.

This week’s Toon Club topic was Spider-Man… a topic I don’t have a lot of background in. Instead of trying to draw a character who has been expertly drawn millions of times before, I decided to return to my “monkeys as superheroes” theme and draw the Spider-Monkey. I’ll leave the actual superhero drawings to people who know more about Peter Parker than they know about Mrs. G.

shane, you should publish the best of your ideas as a calendar. Your random thoughts, and cartoons, could sell very well.

Yes, you could title the calendar: "Shane's Insane in the Brain." That would be totally sweet if all spider monkeys had these costumes. I'm sure the animal rights people would be all over you if you tried that, then the monkeys would be sad because they took away their cool costumes.

When you have the time, I would really like to hear the case for Tootie being a superhero. :D

Hey, you don't know me, but I absolutly love your stuff. They talk about you all the time here at BYU Animation, and you've got alot of talent! Love the spider monkey! Have you seen these things in real life? There super freaky...

Shawn, you know, I finally realized that this was a monkey! It took me some time....that's my fault! I love your characters, simple, yet brilliant!

By the way, did you hear that Spiderman 3 grossed more than any other film on the opening weekend?

Who's Shawn?

Anyway, I was a big Xmen fan when I was 15 as I said, (as well as A-Team, McGyver, Knight Rider, & Dukes of Hazard) but I was also a big Love Boat and Facts of Life fan. Remember when George Clooney was Jo's boyfriend? I do. I know WAY too much about 80's sitcoms - a real TV Junky. Remember 227? And Amen? Sheesh, what was going on back then?

I always love your posts and always appreciate your comments because you're such a master yourself. I figure if Shane Lewis approves, that's definitely a good thing.

I've been told I look like a monkey and I was bit by a spider once... so I love this post! Great work!

Although I usually like superhero movies, I haven't been a huge fan of the Spiderman series and probably won't see 3 until it's out on dvd.

Why am I rambling on your blog? Sorry.

My situation was similar to yours, except I was the only girl in a house full of boys. I knew all about Spider-Man and X-Men, but if anyone asked about My Little Pony or Rainbow Bright, I would have been clueless.

Having fallen prey to Nick at Nite my freshman year of college, I watched my share of Facts of Life episodes (insert shudder here). Tootie would be a pretty good superhero, but you should also consider the annoying chubby girl (whatever her name was) or maybe the tomboy girl on the motorcycle-she seemed pretty tough.

Anyway, I've been meaning to comment for a while. I love your blog!

This blog is so interesting. I must say that at first I thought it would be a waste of time, but after reading your post was impressed with its quality. I just hope that over time you continue maintaining the same quality, and most of the same passion at the time of writing.
